Job Overview:
The Director of Advancement will be directly responsible for successfully creating, leading and implementing an integrated communications and resource development strategy for the San Geronimo Valley Community Center. This role oversees all activities related to board, constituent, and stakeholder communications, as well as the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of annual, major, and planned gifts from individuals, board members, corporations, government agencies, and foundations. The Director of Advancement will implement a multifaceted communications and outreach strategy while also developing new donor and partner relationships and strengthening existing ones to increase the organization’s visibility. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Advancement serves as a member of the organization’s Leadership Team and directly oversees the Development and Marketing & Communications teams. In this role, they work collaboratively across the organization and with the Board of Directors to advance the mission and long-term sustainability of the San Geronimo Valley Community Center.
Job Responsibilities & Duties:

Development & Fundraising

Works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Board, and staff to plan and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including but not limited to:

  • Lead efforts to increase private contributed revenue through individual, corporate, government, and foundation support.
  • Identify and implement new revenue streams and fundraising approaches with an emphasis on sustainable, unrestricted funding.
  • Identify grant opportunities and collaborate with the Executive Director and program staff on proposal development; grant writing responsibilities may be shared depending on program area.
  • Partner with the Executive Director, leadership team, and Board to deepen existing funder relationships and cultivate new supporters.
  • Work closely with the Board Advancement Committee to create, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive development strategy.
  • Plan and assess long-term fundraising goals and financial needs aligned with organizational strategy.
  • Develop the annual campaign and other comprehensive fundraising campaigns.
  • Oversee the planning and coordination of fundraising events, supervising the events and development teams responsible for logistics, sponsorship outreach, and volunteer coordination.
  • Serve as the lead staff presence at events for on-site fundraising, actively driving donation opportunities and community engagement to maximize event revenue.
  • Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for the organization as needed, articulating mission, programs, and impact to donors, partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Support and guide board members in fundraising activities by providing tools, training, and donor cultivation support.
  • Develop and manage the annual development budget and revenue goals, regularly monitoring performance against targets, analyzing actuals, and adjusting strategies and tactics as needed to ensure fundraising objectives are met.
  • Collaborate with Administration and Finance to produce regular reports analyzing fundraising progress, trends, and performance for leadership and the Board.

Marketing & Communications:

  • Partner with the Executive Director and Marketing and Communications Team on public relations and marketing efforts to increase awareness of the organization’s mission, programs, and impact.
  • Develop and implement a multifaceted communications strategy utilizing digital, print, and media channels including email, website, social media, and other platforms.
  • Ensure consistent messaging, branding, and tone across all external communications, donor materials, and stakeholder-facing content.
  • Evaluate and leverage technology and digital tools to strengthen communications, marketing, and fundraising efforts, including online engagement.
  • Collaborate with teams across the organization to support successful marketing and outreach that drive programmatic success.
  • Develop and manage the Marketing and Communications department budget.

Personnel Management:

  • Oversight of direct reports
  • Provide day-to-day supervision, training and direction to team members to ensure responsibilities are carried out
  • Provide feedback to team members on accomplishments and areas that need improvement
  • Provide management training and support to managers on team
  • Manage and participate in hiring of team members when needed
  • Approve schedule changes and PTO requests to ensure that program activities are properly staffed
  • Keeps informed of any personnel issues as they arise, and if needed reports any to Human Resources or direct supervisor

Additional Duties:

  • Serve as a member of the leadership team, together overseeing the strategic direction and general management of the organization and needs across any team or department as needed.
  • Attend staff meetings, board meetings, and committee meetings as appropriate.
  • Support and/or attend fundraising and community events, including evenings and weekends.

  • Spanish language skills are not required but desired.

Experience & Requirements:
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of directly related experience in nonprofit development, advancement, communications, or a related field, ideally in a Director level or higher.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, donor cultivation, and relationship management.
  • Experience working collaboratively with executive leadership and boards.
  • Proficiency with donor databases, CRM systems, and fundraising technology; ability to learn new systems.
  • Proven experience and success with grant writing.
  • Experience with developing and managing budgets.
  • Successfully complete pre-employment background screening including reference checks.
