The Community Center partners with Lagunitas School to support in-school programs and extra-curricular activities. Our staff works closely with the Lagunitas School’s principal and school staff to deliver quality programs.
School programs include weekly Social-Emotional Literacy (SEL) classes, elective classes, seasonal events, and youth and parent education nights. The Community Center also coordinates a volunteer Job Training Program that connects students to volunteer internship opportunities throughout Marin County. Other extra-curricular activities include open gym nights, outings to parks and open spaces, and locally organized youth events.
Social-Emotional Literacy (SEL)
Students in grades 6-8 meet weekly for 45 minutes with classroom teachers and trained facilitators to explore various topics related to middle school development and challenges. Classes encourage students to consider emotional health and wellness from multiple perspectives through project based learning, facilitated conversations, and lecture based lessons.
6th Grade Curriculum:
Trimester 1 & 2: Being Adept Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
Trimester 3: Social Media Literacy Curriculum & Individual Identity.
Full Year: Collaborative Change Projects where as a group, the 7th grade classes tackle a community issue and learn valuable leadership, organizational, and life-skills. Through this project based learning, students feel more connected to each other, gain confidence, and create change for themselves, their school, and the larger community.
Full Year: Individual or small group Change Projects where 8th grade students identify and tackle an issue in their community. This project helps students develop leadership skills, organization skills, makes them aware of issues in their community and empowers them to make a difference. Students learn tangible skills like how to send basic, professional emails and organize an event or series of events. This project allows schools to offer students real life learning and growth opportunities, soft skills such as being on time for appointments, following up, and working with community members are vital to student’s future success. This indirect approach to SEL fosters increased confidence, connectedness, and community.
